Breakthrough India, an HDF-supported grantee working to end violence and discrimination against women and girls, was awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar Award from the President of India. The award was presented by President Pranab Mukherjee on International Women’s Day on March 8th, 2016 to Breakthrough’s India Country Director and VP, Sonali Khan.
The Nari Shakti Puraskar Award is given annually to 20 individuals and organisations for their leadership in women’s rights and this year, recognised Breakthrough’s outstanding contribution to research and development in the field of women’s empowerment in India. Breakthrough’s multimedia campaigns, community mobilization and leadership training address domestic violence, sexual harassment, gender-based sex selection and early marriage from a human rights-based approach.
HDF congratulates Breakthrough India on this prestigious honour and continues to support their work in the hope that violence against women and girls in all its forms will one day be unacceptable everywhere.
