The Provision and Strengthening of Support for Street Children, Families and Communities in Malawi
Duration: Oct 2013 – Oct 2018
Location: Lilongwe and Blantyre, Malawi
Retrak provides support to children and families in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda; its focus is on “the three Ps” of protection, provision and participation. Retrak works with approximately 9,000 children in Africa and 1,750 families and carers every year. Retrak implements this project in partnerships with a local NGO Chisomo Children’s Club.
The project uses a holistic approach to working with street-connected children that has been based on a tested Retrak model in Uganda and Ethiopia. The project works directly with children through provision of protection and other basic services; it also builds capacities of families and communities to ensure successful reintegration. It traces relatives but also actively recruits and trains foster carers and community mentors who work alongside children and families to provide extra support and links to community resources. Success is ensured continues through follow-up and care for each child, their siblings, care-givers and the whole household, as well as involving the wider community to provide support.
